UMAG, Croatia (March 7, 2016) – The U.S. Under-23 Women’s National Team defeated the France National “B” Team 2-0 on goals from Shea Groom and Christina Gibbons to win the Istria Cup.

The U.S. U-23s had beaten the full Slovenia WNT 3-0 on March 2 and tied the Poland U-19 team on March 4 to compile seven points and win the eight-team competition.

Against France, Groom scored her second goal of the competition, running behind the defense to get on the end of a chipped pass from Caprice Dydasco. Groom had a one-on-one with the goalkeeper and slotted into the left side of the net to put the USA up 1-0.

Gibbons sealed the match in the 78th minute after Samantha Witteman beat her defender down the right side, drew the goalkeeper to the near post and passed back to Gibbons for an easy tap in with her left foot. The goals were the third U-23 international scores for both FC Kansas City’s Groom and Duke’s Gibbons.

Eleven of the players on the roster will now look to the new NWSL which begins on April 16.
